pretenders to the punk / psych / prog throne.The sound on this album is varied, but one might say it’s akin to fIREHOSE
crossing streams with Goblin in an acid vat. There’s even an acoustic bridge
in “With SARS, I’ll Ride the Wind” that sounds like a fever-warbled classic
rock jammer.Triclops! is an acid-punk version of avant-garde classical composition with
cinematic textures–an absurdist soundscape replete with comedic relief that
acknowledges its own pure ridiculousness. This career suicide / cult-accepted
approach to exhibitionism finds kindred spirits in envelope-pushing,
progress-obsessed minds like Butthole Surfers, Slayer, David Lynch, Zappa,
Heinlein, Timothy Leary, Melvins / Big Business, B. Traven, Deerhoof, Bill
Hicks, Sun Ra, Fellini, Sonic Youth, and Scratch Acid.Having toured Europe and shared bills with Melt Banana, NoMeansNo, Big

The Cosmic Jokers were a German space/electronic/psych supergroup, who recorded for the legendary Cosmic Couriers label in the mid 70s. The line up was Ash Ra Tempel’s Manuel Gottsching, Wallenstein’s Harald Grosskopf & Jurgen Dollase, Klaus Schulze and scene engineer/sideman Dieter Dierks. This CD was their debut from 1974, and it’s a pretty spectacular surge into 70s drugged byways, Gottsching’s trademark acid guitar on top of instrumental waves of analog synth gurgling and spaced out electronic effects. Until recently this stuff was largely unknown and way underrated, at least in American circles. All 5 Cosmic Jokers CDs come in pleasing digipaks.
For those of you that can’t get enough of this stuff, five albums were cranked out in 1974 including: (1) The Cosmic Jokers; (2) Galactic Supermarket; (3) Sci-Fi Party; (4) Gilles Zeitschiff; and (5) Planeten Sit In.

Smoke City are an English band, which blends acid jazz and trip hop, borrowing from Brazilian styles such as samba and bossa nova. They are best known for their single “Underwater Love”, which was a major hit in 1996, after being used in a Levi’s jeans TV ad “Mermaids” (directed by Michel Gondry). The original music video for the single is notable for predating The Matrix in its use of bullet time motion.
In 1997 the band released their first album Flying Away, which included several hits like “Underwater Love”, “Mr. Gorgeous (and Miss Curvaceous)” and “Бguas de Marзo (Joga Bossa Mix)”. Whilst Flying Away was hard to classify because it had everything from light trip-hop to gentle guitar ballads, Smoke City’s next album, Heroes of Nature (released in 2001), was considered too odd even by fans, combining even more styles and incorporating dance beats in some of the tracks.
An extended version of Heroes of Nature had three more tracks than the original, one of them being a cover of John Lennon’s famous song “Imagine”.
Underwater Love is also a track on the soundtrack/album “Thicker Than Water.” Thicker Than Water is a surf video.
The three musicians no longer play together as Smoke City.
Smoke City - Flying Away (1997)
1997 debut album for London based trip-hop act with a distinctively South American flavor inspired in part by vocalist Nina Miranda’s childhood. Best known for the track ‘Underwater Love’ that was featured in a successful Levis’ ad campaign, the album’s other highlights include, ‘Numbers’ and ‘Dark Walk’ and Miranda’s sultry vocals in English, French and Portuguese. Ok so maybe a bit of an exaggeration but the last three years have been an incredible ride for the band considered to be Holland’s hottest live act and as they release their second album things seem set to get even crazier. Although Kraak & Smaak originally started out as a studio project for the founder members Oscar De Jong, Mark Kneppers & Wim Plug it quickly became one of the hottest live and DJ properties in dance music.
