Review: Metalcrypt (4/5)

This was the fourth Running Wild full-length from waaaaaay back in 1988, only the second CD to bear the now-familiar pirate theme. Originally a more thrashy satanic band, with “Under Jolly Roger” RW grabbed the pirate thing and never looked back. Here they expanded and enlarged on the idea, getting good and set for ye long haule, matey.

It has been said if you’ve heard one Running Wild album you’ve heard them all, and I won’t really disagree with that. Like fellow old-school stalwarts such as Saxon and Iron Maiden, Running Wild never vary their formula much. Every album will have some killer cuts and some filler cuts, this one is no different. We get the traditional “Intro” track, then The Big Opener “Port Royal” gets things moving in fine style. This is RW all the way folks: big riffs, big choruses, catchy hooks all over. “Raging Fire” is another great song, probably the best one here with a great pummeling chorus. “Into The Arena” is a bit dull, but then so is “Warchild”. But with classic RW songs like “Mutiny”, “Conquistadores” and the epic “Calico Jack” I’m not gonna nitpick about some filler. Even the instrumental “Final Gates” is really cool, despite being an atypical song for this band. The only gripe I have with this album is that the recording job sucks. Not the actual sound, but the fact that it is so frigging quiet. You have to really crank this album to even hear it, fortunately it’s worth cranking. While not as good to my ears as later works like “Blazon Stone” or “Black Hand Inn”, “Port Royal” is still a solid album from one of metal’s longest-running and most reliable bands. Arrrrh!

Review: Metal-Observer (9.5/10)

In my opinion, STRATOVARIUS are the best Speed/Melodic Metal band of this earth besides HELLOWEEN. Every new album has its hits and classics and except from their really weak debut album “Fright Night”, STRATOVARIUS had never released any bad album. One of the greatest works of the guys around guitar player Timo Tolkki is surely their “Visions” album from 1997.

The ten songs on this album are thorough on highest level and offer pretty much variety. Supercatchy and STRATOVARIUS typical speed songs like “Black Diamond” (hit), “Forever Free” or “Legions” meet midtempo stompers like “The Kiss Of Judas”, “The Abyss Of Your Eyes” or “Paradise”. New respectively stronger appearing on “Visions” is the classical vein of the band. The “crazy” Swede Jens Johannson always conjures up new classical elements from his keyboard and also Timo Tolkkis guitar playing has a strong classic influence. That also means, that the bombast factor on “Visions” hasn’t decreased. But STRATOVARIUS don’t exaggerate it. Exactly that subdued bombastic elements serve for the goose flesh on halfballads like “Before The Winter” and “Coming Home”. Singer Timo Kotipelto can completely convince with his crystal-clear voice this time. That wasn’t ever the case on their first records. But in the meantime, he also handles the high pitched passages and his voice remains always diversified.

On the instrumental “Holy Light” all musicians show off their abilities. This song offers a lot of time changes and the already known guitar/keyboard duels between Timo Tolkki and Jens Johansson. Unfortunately, the song gets a bit lenghty towards the end. Could have been shorter. But this is also the one and only critics on “Visions”. The titletrack on the end of the record crowns that all. This more than ten minutes lasting work contains all fortes of the band. There are calmer notes, fast passages, midtempo, bombast and insane solos. Actually the whole album in one song. The lyrics are about the prophecies of the mid-age savant Nostradamus and they are pretty interesting, in my opinion. But the song is in any case a brilliant closing for this superb album, where’s also nothing to criticize in terms of the production.

“Visions” is one of the best STRATOVARIUS records, in my opinion. It has its reasons why many songs apperar in the live set of Tolkki and Co. still today.

“Black Diamond”, “Paradise” or “The Kiss Of Judas” are hits for eternity.

All metalheads, which dig on HELLOWEEN, HAMMERFALL, SONATA ARCTICA or GAMMA RAY and don’t know this record or even the band, should check this out immediately! Fans have “Visions” already in their collection.

truANT is Alien Ant Farm’s second album. It was released on August 8, 2003 by DreamWorks. The producers of the album were Stone Temple Pilots’ guitarist and bassist Robert DeLeo and Dean DeLeo.

The music video for track “These Days” was filmed on a roof top across the street from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. The surprise video shoot was shot during the 2003 BET Awards while numerous hip hop artists and rappers were arriving on the red carpet before the awards show. The video catches the reaction from many artists, including Nelly, Snoop Dogg, and Lil Kim (the former of which was also signed to DreamWorks).

The album art is based on the classic Pee-Chee brand school folder (no longer in production), featuring the faces of the band members.

Up in the Attic

Up in the Attic is Alien Ant Farm’s third album. The album is identical to 3rd Draft with the addition of one new track, and radio promo, “Forgive and Forget”. It’s considered a commercial flop in the U.S. due to the facts that there was little support for the album with no official single released (“Forgive and Forget” was only released as a promo to radio and received little airplay) and no tour. The album debuted at number 114 on the Billboard 200 and in its next week dropped to number 198 and fell off the next week.

The album cover features references to songs of past albums, such as Pink Tea, Smooth Criminal, Movies, and S.S. Recognize.

There have been a number of different versions of Pink Floyd’s “Live at Pompeii”. This is the 1972 original film version, often considered to be the best.

It contains the original intro song and six tracks, three of which were recorded at Pompeii in 1971 and three of which were recorded in a Paris studio in 1972.

These tracks have been ripped from DVD to FLAC and converted to mp3 at 320 kbps.
